How to convert Excel to a Markdown table

  1. Prepare the workbook

Save as .xlsx, recalculate formulas and remove sheets or hidden data you do not intend to share.

  2. Upload the XLSX file

Choose a workbook up to 20 MB and select Convert to Markdown.

  3. Verify table values

Check worksheet names, headers, dates and numbers, then copy or download the Markdown tables.

Before you upload

Prepare the workbook

Save your workbook as .xlsx. Remove sheets or rows you do not intend to share, including hidden data. This site accepts XLSX, not legacy XLS or macro-enabled XLSM. Password-protected workbooks must be unlocked first.

Check formula values

The converter is not a spreadsheet calculation engine. Formula cells may depend on values last saved by your spreadsheet app. Recalculate and save the workbook before uploading, and verify important numbers in the result.

Keep tables manageable

A wide worksheet makes a wide Markdown table. Merged cells, charts, colors and conditional formatting do not map neatly to Markdown. Split large sheets or export just the data you need when preparing documents for an AI context window.

Excel to Markdown: common questions

Does this Excel converter support XLS or XLSM?

This online tool accepts .xlsx, not legacy .xls or macro-enabled .xlsm. Save an XLSX copy in your spreadsheet editor. CSV files are also accepted when you only need a single plain-text table.

Can one workbook produce multiple Markdown tables?

Yes. Worksheet content can appear under separate sheet headings, as shown in the example. Remove unwanted sheets before uploading; do not assume that hiding a sheet or row excludes its data.

Will Excel formulas be recalculated?

No. The converter is not a calculation engine and may use the values last cached by your spreadsheet application. Recalculate, save and check important totals before using the result.

What happens to merged cells, charts and formatting?

Cell colors, charts, conditional formatting and complex merged regions do not map directly to Markdown. Prefer a rectangular table with clear column names, and split very wide worksheets into smaller tables.
