What is MarkItDown?

MarkItDown is Microsoft’s open-source Python library for converting files to Markdown, a plain-text format for headings, lists, links and tables. This independent MarkItDown online tool lets you convert a document in your browser without installing Python.

Use PDF to Markdown for selectable text, Word to Markdown for DOCX headings and notes, or Excel to Markdown for XLSX tables. The result can be edited in a Markdown editor or reviewed before adding it to an AI workflow or knowledge base.

Conversion runs on this server, not entirely in your browser. Temporary files are removed after the request. This version does not provide OCR or preserve a document’s page design. For local automation, see the installation and Python guide below.

Choose a format. Keep the content.

Each file type needs a slightly different approach. Start with the format you use.

MarkItDown online: common questions

What is MarkItDown?

MarkItDown is Microsoft’s open-source Python library for converting documents into Markdown. This independent website adds a browser interface; it is not a Microsoft service.

Is the converter free?

This preview is free, with one file up to 20 MB per request and 30 attempts per 10 minutes per IP. The server processes one conversion at a time. If it is busy, try again shortly.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

This version extracts existing text. Scanned pages and image-only documents need OCR, which is not enabled here. A blank result will show a clear message instead of an empty download.

Will my layout look exactly the same?

Markdown preserves useful structure, not page design. Check complex tables, equations, reading order and slides with many text boxes before using the output.

Where do uploaded files go?

Files are sent to this server for conversion, then temporary input and output files are deleted when the request finishes. Downloads return the current Markdown to the same server to create an attachment without saving it. We do not keep document history or send files to an AI API. Start with sample files during this preview.
